- "It keeps running after we flush." The inlet valve is not shutting off, so the cistern keeps filling and trickling into the bowl.
- "There's water on the floor round the base." A seal between the cistern and the pan, or the connection at the floor, has failed.
- "The flush is weak, or we have to hold the button down." Usually the outlet valve, or the buttons and linkage that work it.
- "It's an in-wall cistern and we can't see anything." We open the access panel behind the buttons. The valves are the same, just harder to reach.
What happens if you leave it
A running toilet wastes water every hour of the day, and the bill shows it. Water at the base is worse: it soaks under the pan into the floor, and on a suspended timber floor that becomes rotten boards and a much bigger repair than a set of seals.

- We find the leak. The cistern, the valves, the seals and the connection at the floor, tested one at a time.
- You get the price. Repair or replace, before we start.
- Fixed and tested. New valves or seals in, flushed and checked for leaks. If a part has to be ordered, we leave the toilet working in the meantime.

What will it cost?
It depends on what has failed and the type of cistern. You get the price before we start. Upfront pricing, agreed before we start.
Will we be left without a toilet?
No. If a part or a new suite has to be ordered, we get the toilet working well enough to use in the meantime.
Do you do in-wall cisterns?
Yes. We work through the access panel behind the flush buttons, and carry the common in-wall valves.
How do I check if it's leaking?
Listen for a hiss or a trickle long after the flush. Or put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, wait half an hour without flushing, and see if the colour shows in the bowl.

Common questions about leaking toilets
How do I know my toilet is leaking?
The common ones are a cistern that never stops running, water sitting on the floor at the base, a flush that will not clear the bowl, or a damp smell in the room that does not shift. A cistern that runs quietly can waste a great deal of water before anyone notices, so it is worth listening for.
What causes it?
Usually the inlet valve washer, which lets water keep overflowing from the cistern into the bowl. After that it is the seals between the cistern and the pan, which show up as water on the floor, or the outlet valve, which stops the toilet flushing properly.
Can you fix it on the same visit?
Most of the time, yes. We carry the common inlet and outlet valves and seals. If the pan or the cistern itself has cracked, we will make it usable, order the replacement and come back to fit it.
I only have one toilet. Will I be without it?
No. If a part has to be ordered we will get it working well enough to use in the meantime, and tell you when the new one is coming. Nobody gets left without a toilet overnight.
Do you repair or replace?
It depends on the age of the suite and what has failed. A valve or a seal is a repair. A cracked pan, a cistern past parts, or a single-flush suite that is costing you on the water bill is usually worth replacing, and we will tell you which you are looking at before you spend anything.
Will a new toilet actually save water?
A dual flush suite uses a good deal less than an old single flush, and a cistern that has been quietly running is costing you more than either. If your toilet is old enough to be on the way out, the water saving is part of the sum.
