A roof plumber looks after everything on a roof that moves water: gutters, valleys, downpipes, flashings, box gutters and the sheeting itself. A roofer lays the covering. The difference matters, because most of the leaks we are called to are not a hole in the roof at all. They are a flashing that has lifted, a valley packed with leaves, or a box gutter that cannot clear a heavy downpour.
Water that gets past a roof does not stay where it landed. It runs along a batten or a rafter and comes through a ceiling metres away from where it got in, which is why a quote written from the ground is a guess. We get up there, find the actual cause, and fix that.
What we get called to
- Leaks that show up a long way from the cause. Traced properly rather than sealed at the nearest likely spot.
- Gutters that overflow every storm. Sometimes leaves, sometimes a blocked downpipe, sometimes a gutter too small for the roof above it. Three of those are cheap and one is not.
- Rust in old gutters and valleys. Decades of sun and salt air on the harbour side finish gutters from the inside out.
- Tiles cracked by heat and age. Common on the Federation and interwar roofs right across the North Shore.
- Box gutters between terraces. When one of these overflows it goes inside rather than outside, which is why they are worth checking before the storm.

Common questions
What is the difference between a roof plumber and a roofer?
A roofer lays the roof covering. A roof plumber deals with everything on the roof that carries water, which is where most leaks actually start. In New South Wales roof plumbing is licenced work, so ask for the number and check it.
Do I need a whole new roof or just a repair?
Usually a repair, and we will say so. A roof gets replaced when the covering is genuinely at the end of its life or so many repairs are stacking up that they stop making sense. We will tell you how much life the rest of it has rather than sell you a roof you do not need yet.
How much does it cost?
Gutter replacement starts from $135 per metre and leak investigation starts from $440. A replacement is measured and quoted properly, at no charge for the visit, because the figure depends on the roof.
Are you insured for working at heights?
Yes, with current public liability and workers compensation. We will send you the certificates of currency if you want to see them, and any legitimate roof plumber will do the same.
